Dr Claudia Montanaro has many years of experience at tertiary centres, including Royal Brompton Hospital, Barts Heart Centre, Great Ormond Street Hospital, and Guys and St Thomas’ hospitals, with expertise in:


Dr Claudia Montanaro is a consultant cardiologist who treats NHS and private patients at Royal Brompton Hospital and a senior honorary lecturer at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College.

She trained in cardiology at San Rafael University Hospital in Milan and was awarded with honours. She was appointed as a specialist in adult congenital heart disease and cardiac MRI at Royal Brompton Hospital.

She offers counselling for high-risk family planning and looks after high risk patients including those with cardiac disease during pregnancy.

She obtained her Level 3 European MRI accreditations in general cardiac and congenital heart disease MRI and the European Congenital Echocardiogram certification and Dr Montanaro is fully trained in general adult cardiology. Before joining the Royal Brompton Hospital as a consultant, she trained at Royal Brompton Hospital, Barts Heart Centre, Great Ormond Street Hospital, and Guys and St Thomas’ hospitals.

Dr Montanaro leads the univentricular (Fontan) service at Royal Brompton Hospital.


Dr Claudia Montanaro’s research interests include:

  • congenital heart disease
  • heart disease and pregnancy
  • heart failure


Dr Claudia Montanaro serves as an associate editor for the International Journal of Cardiology and International Journal of Cardiology Congenital Heart Disease. She is a reviewer for most major journals in the cardiovascular field. She is and author in peer-reviewed publications (including papers in The Lancet, Circulation and European Heart Journal).

She has written chapters for a few cardiology highly regarded textbooks including:  Adult Congenital Heart Disease: Diagnosis and Management, the world’s best-selling textbook in this growing cardiovascular sector, now in its fourth edition.
