What is infant feeding support?

Our infant feeding service at St Thomas’ Hospital provides expert support for parents as they begin life with a new baby.

Led by a specialist paediatric dietitian and certified lactation consultant, the service offers practical, evidence-based guidance tailored to your baby’s individual feeding needs.

We provide advice and support across a range of feeding options from breastfeeding and bottle feeding to combination feeding, alongside assessments for growth and feeding concerns.

Providing care for all neonatal feeding issues

Parents can access specialist advice and guidance for:

  • breastfeeding and/or bottle feeding
  • weaning onto solid foods
  • cow’s milk protein allergy
  • growth concerns and feeding assessments
  • reflux
  • constipation and diarrhoea
  • tongue tie

Our infant feeding consultations provide personalised, one‑to‑one support from a specialist children’s dietitian and lactation consultant, tailored to your baby’s feeding needs.

Where appropriate, your child can be referred to world‑leading paediatric specialists at Evelina London Children’s Hospital for ongoing care or further assessment.

Cancellation and rescheduling policy

If you need to cancel or reschedule your infant feeding consultation, please contact us at least 24 hours in advance to avoid being charged the full consultation fee.


Infant feeding group workshops

Our infant feeding group workshops provides expert guidance on all aspects of newborn feeding, giving you the knowledge, confidence, and support needed to nourish your baby from the very beginning. Whatever your feeding plans may be, you’ll leave feeling informed, empowered, and better prepared for the journey ahead.

These sessions are open to both expectant and new parents alike, although they are primarily designed as antenatal classes to help families prepare for feeding their newborn with confidence.

You can choose to book individual sessions or attend all four workshops as a discounted package, depending on the level of support you’re looking for.

The workshops run monthly and from the first Friday of the month, starting at 5:30pm.

This workshop focuses on how breastfeeding works at a biological level, helping parents understand what to expect in the early days.

You’ll learn about:

  • how lactation works biologically
  • endocrine and autocrine control of lactation
  • infant reflexes and feeding cues
  • getting breastfeeding off to the right start

This session provides practical guidance to help you feel confident feeding your baby at the breast.

Topics include:

  • how to position your baby comfortably
  • achieving an effective latch
  • signs your baby is getting enough milk
  • night feeds and sleeping patterns

Designed to support parents experiencing common breastfeeding challenges.

This session covers:

  • low milk supply
  • nipple pain and cracking
  • engorgement
  • plugged ducts
  • mastitis
  • breast abscesses

This workshop supports parents who are expressing milk, combination feeding, or using formula.

You’ll receive guidance on:

  • hand expression techniques
  • pumping breastmilk
  • safe storage and handling of breastmilk
  • when and how to cup or bottle feed
  • choosing the right bottle
  • burping techniques
  • formula feeding advice

Locations

Appointments take place in our dedicated private outpatient facility, Westminster Bridge Consulting Rooms (WBCR). Alternatively, Michaela can see parents in our Westminster Maternity Suite. Both are located at St Thomas’ Hospital:
