Leading the way in kidney transplants and dialysis
We established England’s first children’s kidney transplant programme over 50 years ago, and today we are one of the largest and busiest children’s kidney transplant units in the UK, accepting referrals from other centres for complex cases and children with multiple health problems.
Our world‑renowned team performs a number of complex transplants referred from other units both nationally and internationally, and we prioritise pre‑emptive kidney transplantation to help prevent the need for dialysis wherever suitable.

Children’s kidney transplant
Home to one of the most successful living‑donor transplant programmes in Europe, our surgeons use innovative approaches such as 3D printing to enhance surgical planning for smaller donors, as well as minimally invasive keyhole and robotic techniques to support faster donor recovery.
For children without a blood‑group‑compatible donor, we can also perform ABO‑incompatible transplants after careful preparation.
Our specialists are experts in managing children post‑transplant and our multidisciplinary team includes the support of specialist dieticians, providing continuity of expert care.
Following surgery, our kidney pharmacists provide a dedicated Transplant Medicines Education Programme to support families in managing their medicines long‑term.
Our Young Adult Clinic (YAC), established in 2008, is a collaborative clinic with Guy’s Hospital for 16‑ to 25‑year‑olds, ensuring seamless care for young people during the transition to our adult kidney services.

Our paediatric kidney experts help boy to walk again
Our children’s renal team fulfilled 11-year-old Saad Fahad Qasam Alawadhi’s wish to play and walk again – by helping him and his family manage the symptoms of complex primary nephrotic syndrome (NS).
Saad’s mother said: “ The team at Evelina are amazing. I’d like to thank all the team – nurses, doctors and junior training doctors. They took such special care of Saad when he was coming regularly for his treatment. I would also like to thank the play therapist – the school is excellent at Evelina.”
