Mr Gianluca Lucchese is a consultant cardiac and mitral surgeon specialising in complex and repeat combined surgical heart procedures.

He regularly treats patients with conditions such as:

Biography

Mr Gianluca Lucchese was appointed consultant cardiac and mitral surgeon at St Thomas’ Hospital in 2016.

Before his recruitment to London, Mr Lucchese completed comprehensive training in Italy and UK, including congenital cardiac, heart transplant and mechanical circulatory support.

His focus has always been to provide an individualised approach to the patient in order to offer the best long-term benefits minimising surgical trauma. This is particularly important in terms of your experience and treatment outcome. In this regard, he has been leading quality improvement projects on infection prevention and frailty in cardiac surgery.


Research

Mr Gianluca Lucchese’s expertise lies in complex and repeat combined heart procedures, including complete arterial coronary bypass surgery, mitral and aortic valve repair surgery and complex thoracic aortic surgery with particular interest in the valve-sparing aortic root replacement.

Mr Lucchese has published more than 50 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals and is associate and review editor of several journals and meetings.

His research interests focus on the biochemical pathways of myocardial hypertrophy and myocardial protection, minimally invasive valvular surgery (keyhole surgery) and trans-catheter valve implantation (such as TAVI).

As an expert in his field, he is regularly invited to speak at national and international scientific meetings.
