Dr Maria Kokosi is a consultant respiratory physician with a sub-specialty in interstitial lung disease (ILD).
She is experienced in managing general respiratory conditions such as asthma, respiratory infections and bronchiectasis.
She regularly treats patients with conditions such as:
- idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
- hypersensitivity pneumonitis
- connective tissue diseases associated ILD
- sarcoidosis
- pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP)
- cystic lung diseases (including LAM, Langerhans cell Histiocytosis, Birt Hogg Dube syndrome)
- lymphatic disorders and other rare lung diseases

Biography
Dr Maria Kokosi completed her specialist training in respiratory medicine in 2011, following her medical training at the University of Athens. During her training, she gained additional experience in rheumatology at the largest rheumatology department in Greece. She was subsequently selected for a prestigious clinical attachment at the Medical University of South Carolina, USA, where she worked closely with internationally recognised experts in ILD and sarcoidosis.
In 2012, Dr Kokosi joined the Royal Brompton Hospital as a clinical research fellow working with Professor Athol Wells, a leading authority in ILD. From 2014, she undertook consultant-level clinical duties as a senior clinical fellow before subsequently being appointed as a consultant respiratory physician.
She has developed a particular interest in complex and rare lung diseases. Dr Kokosi currently leads the specialist clinical service for rare lung diseases, including pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP), lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) and langerhans cell histiocytosis. She also coordinates a national multidisciplinary meeting dedicated to rare cystic lung diseases.
Research
Dr Kokosi’s research focuses on interstitial and rare lung diseases, with particular expertise in rare cystic lung disorders and pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP). She is actively involved in clinical trials investigating new treatments for rare lung diseases and ILD, including as principal investigator for the international IMPALA-2 trial of inhaled molgramostim in autoimmune PAP.
She is a member of the European Respiratory Society Task Force developing clinical practice guidelines for the diagnosis and management of PAP.
Dr Kokosi has authored and co-authored 79 publications in peer-reviewed medical journals and is regularly invited to lecture at international congresses and symposia. A selection of her key publications can be viewed here.
Alongside her clinical work, Dr Kokosi is actively involved in medical education. She teaches respiratory trainees and visiting international fellows, is a member of the European Respiratory Society HERMES Adult Examination Committee, and has supervised BSc research projects at Imperial College London.
