Biography
Dr Joanne Shannon graduated with Honours from the Queen’s University Belfast in 2002, after being awarded a number of undergraduate prizes. She began cardiology training at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast where she also undertook clinical research and was awarded an MD in 2009.
During her cardiology training, she undertook a highly prestigious clinical fellowship in Milan, under the mentorship of Dr Antonio Colombo, a world authority in interventional cardiology. Through this she gained invaluable experience in both coronary and structural heart intervention. She then completed her training at Imperial College, London.
Dr Shannon was appointed as a consultant cardiologist at Frimley Park Hospital, Surrey in 2012 and as an honorary consultant cardiologist at the Royal Brompton Hospital in 2013.
Research
Dr Shannon’s research interests include revascularisation strategies in ST elevation myocardial infarction, the use of physiology and intracoronary imaging to guide PCI in multivessel disease and the use of drug coated balloons for the treatment of small coronary vessels.
She is regularly invited to speak at national and international meetings and is involved in the teaching and training of interventional cardiologists in both the coronary and structural space and has had a number of publications in peer reviewed journals.
