Clinical expertise

Dr Vasilis Kouranos is highly specialised in pulmonary fibrosis and interstitial lung diseases such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, hypersensitivity pneumonitis and connective tissue disease-associated interstitial lung diseases at Royal Brompton Hospital.

He has sub-specialist expertise in sarcoidosis and particularly cardiac sarcoidosis, which was the subject of his PhD thesis. He also offers clinical support for sarcoidosis and ILD patients with lung cancer.

Dr Kouranos has developed significant experience in the management of patients with long COVID as well as post-COVID interstitial lung disease.


Dr Vasilis Kouranos joined the Royal Brompton Hospital in 2013 and has been an invaluable member of the consultant body of the interstitial lung disease and sarcoidosis department. He has also contributed to the substantial development and growth of both the interstitial lung disease and sarcoidosis service at Royal Brompton Hospital.

Dr Kouranos completed an MSc in Thoracic Oncology with a specific interest in the antibiotic prophylaxis of chemotherapy-induced neutropenic lung cancer patients.

During his PhD, he focused on the use of CMR as a screening tool for cardiac involvement in patients with biopsy-proven sarcoidosis. He was awarded a research scholarship grant for that study. This research study was published in a high-impact journal which influences current practice in the field.


Dr Vasilis Kouranos’ PhD focused on the screening of cardiac sarcoidosis with cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and he has also been awarded an MSC in thoracic oncology.

He is actively involved in clinical research with the main focus on interstitial lung disease and sarcoidosis.  As part of his research activities he has co-designed and participated as a principal investigator in clinical trials in the treatment of pulmonary and cardiac sarcoidosis. He is also the course organiser of the Annual Cardiac Sarcoidosis symposium with national and international delegates.


Dr Vasilis Kouranos is the author of over 60 peer-reviewed articles, including original papers, editorials, abstracts and book chapters. He has developed the Royal Brompton Hospital Cardiac Sarcoidosis Registry, which is the largest in the world.
