Clinical expertise

Professor Michael Gatzoulis is a consultant cardiologist and clinical and academic lead for adult congenital heart disease at Royal Brompton Hospital. His clinical interests include:

“My key objective is to promote the needs of patients with congenital heart disease, including delivery of best care, translationary research, training and education.”



Biography

Professor Michael Gatzoulis is a consultant cardiologist at Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals, where he treats private and NHS patients.

He graduated in medicine from Aristotelian Medical School, Thessaloniki, Greece. He went on to complete his postgraduate training in congenital heart disease in the UK and Canada. In 1996, he was awarded a PhD from Imperial College London.

In 1999, he became head of the GUCH (grown-up congenital heart disease) unit at Royal Brompton Hospital, succeeding Professor Sommerville.

Professor Michael Gatzoulis is the academic head of the Adult Congenital Heart Centre and the National Centre for Pulmonary Hypertension at Royal Brompton Hospital.

He is a professor of cardiology and congenital heart disease at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London.


Publications

Professor Gatzoulis serves as:

  • founding editor in chief of the International Journal of Cardiology Congenital Heart Disease
  • deputy editor of the European Heart Journal and the International Journal of Cardiology
  • associate or guest editor or reviewer for most major journals in the cardiovascular field

He is also the author of over 430 peer-reviewed publications including papers in:

  • Nature
  • New England Journal of Medicine
  • The Lancet
  • European Heart Journal
  • Circulation

He has edited or co-edited 10 cardiology textbooks. He is the chief editor of Adult Congenital Heart Disease: Diagnosis and Management, the world’s bestselling title in this growing cardiovascular sector, now in its fourth Edition.

Furthermore, Professor Gatzoulis was responsible for the content of the thorax section of the 40th edition of the iconic medical textbook Gray’s Anatomy: The Anatomical Basis of Clinical Practice, published in 2008. Professor Gatzoulis served as the President of the International Society of Adult Congenital Heart Disease and is the incoming Chairman of the European Society of Cardiology Working Group on ACHD.

Teaching

Professor Michael Gatzoulis regularly lectures at national and international meetings. He is the founder and director of one of the most established conferences in adult congenital heart disease, the Advanced Symposium on Congenital Heart Disease in the Adult.

He has been a visiting professor at a number of acclaimed international institutions including:

  • Harvard University, Stanford University and Vanderbilt University, USA
  • University of Athens and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece
  • Tokyo Womens’ Hospital/University, Japan and others

Professor Gatzoulis has led one of the largest international clinical training and research programmes in the cardiovascular field. He regularly supervises fellows from around the world.

Since 2012, Professor Gatzoulis and Dr Kostas Dimopoulos have led an international master class in pulmonary arterial hypertension related to congenital heart disease at Royal Brompton Hospital.​ ​​​​​​Twenty senior cardiologists from around the world take part every year in theoretical and practical sessions on this subject.
