Biography
Dr Ian Balfour-Lynn is a consultant in paediatric respiratory medicine at Royal Brompton Hospital, where he treats private and NHS patients.
He graduated from University College London and Westminster Hospital Medical School (now part of Imperial College London). He then trained in general paediatrics at Westminster Children’s Hospital (now part of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital), Queen Mary’s Hospital in Roehampton, Northwick Park Hospital and St Bartholomew’s Hospital.
Most of his specialist respiratory training was carried out at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. He worked in many departments including respiratory medicine, intensive care, infection and immunology and heart-lung transplant.
Dr Balfour-Lynn spent two years in full-time research for his MD thesis entitled ‘Host Defence Factors in Wheezy Infants with Respiratory Infections’, which he completed in 1994.
As an expert in children’s medicine, Dr Balfour-Lynn is on the NHS specialist register for paediatrics. He is fully accredited in paediatric respiratory medicine with a special interest in respiratory disease.
Research
Dr Ian Balfour-Lynn’s current research projects include:
- aspiration as a cause of chest infections
- quality improvement in cystic fibrosis
Publications
Dr Balfour-Lynn has written numerous papers, book chapters, national guidelines and reviews on his specialist subjects.
Furthermore, Dr Balfour-Lynn is on the editorial board for Pediatric Pulmonology, a specialist journal published in the USA. He is an associate editor for the quarterly journal, Paediatric Respiratory Reviews.
Teaching
Dr Balfour-Lynn is an educational supervisor for respiratory trainees at Royal Brompton Hospital. He helps organise National Grid Training of Paediatric Respiratory Medicine in London.
In addition, Dr Ian Balfour-Lynn is a regular expert speaker at medical conferences in the UK and overseas.
