Clinical expertise

Dr Colm McCabe treats patients with all forms of pulmonary hypertension as well as patients with breathlessness following a pulmonary embolism and unexplained exercise limitation.

He is the joint lead clinician for exercise services in non-invasive cardiology. He is developing an invasive cardiopulmonary exercise testing program within the pulmonary vascular disease unit.

He can interpret right heart catheterisation with exercise tests and cardiopulmonary exercise tests.



Biography

Dr Colm McCabe is a consultant respiratory physician at Royal Brompton Hospital.

He studied at Imperial College London and graduated in 2004, then completed his specialist respiratory training in Oxford.

He then completed an MD research degree in pulmonary vascular disease at Royal Papworth Hospital, Cambridge, in 2013.

In 2015, he completed specialist training in exercise physiology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, USA, thanks to the Berkeley Fellowship and Scadding Morriston-Davies Fellowship.

In June 2016, Dr McCabe was appointed as a respiratory consultant in pulmonary hypertension and high dependency care at Royal Brompton Hospital.

Dr McCabe is a clinical ambassador for Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals Charity, working to strengthen relationships between the charity, donors and the hospitals. In this role, Dr McCabe’s clinical expertise helps donors to understand the difference their support makes and deepens ties to the charity’s life-changing projects, pioneering research, and improved patient outcomes.


Teaching

Dr Colm McCabe lectures and teaches on pulmonary vascular disease, exercise medicine and general respiratory medicine.

Publications

He has published numerous peer-reviewed papers on pulmonary hypertension and general respiratory medicine. He is a reviewer for Respirology and PLOS One journals.
