Mr Chris Callaghan is a consultant transplant surgeon and specialises in kidney transplantation and pancreas transplantation.

He regularly treats patients with conditions such as:

  • renal (kidney) cancer
  • systemic vasculitis

He performs treatments such as:

  • kidney transplantation
  • vascular access and peritoneal dialysis insertion
  • hand-assisted laparoscopic (key-hole surgery) donor nephrectomy
  • dialysis access surgery
  • pancreas transplantation


Biography

Mr Chris Callaghan is a consultant transplant surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals.

Mr Chris Callaghan trained at the University of Otago, New Zealand, and then completed his higher surgical training in multi-organ abdominal transplant surgery at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge.

He has a PhD in transplant immunology from the University of Cambridge and continues to have active research interests in deceased donor organ utilisation and machine perfusion


Research

Mr Chris Callaghan has a specialist interest in paediatric kidney transplantation and pancreas transplantation.

His research interests are in the mechanisms of antibody-mediated rejection and B cell tolerance, the use of autogenous veins in vascular access surgery, increasing the use of donation after circulatory death organs and improving the utilisation of donated organs.
