Our infant feeding service at St Thomas’ Hospital provides invaluable support as you start life with a new baby.

We offer advice on different feeding options from breastfeeding to bottle feeding, as well as assessments for growth and feeding issues.

Providing care for all neonatal feeding issues

Access support from expert specialists who can provide advice and guidance on:

  • breastfeeding and/or bottle feeding
  • weaning onto solids
  • cow’s milk protein allergy
  • growth concerns/assessment
  • reflux
  • constipation/diarrhoea
  • tongue tie

With access to our world-leading children’s specialists at Evelina London, your child can be referred to paediatric experts for ongoing care should there be any specific concerns.

New baby feeding support group

As you prepare to give birth, we’re here to provide you with support and guidance for the arrival of your new baby.

Our infant feeding support group workshops are designed to provide expert advice on all feeding issues related to newborns and give you the opportunity to ask questions.

Sessions topics vary but are centred around tips for new parents including:

  • lactation and managing your milk supply
  • breastfeeding guidance including latching, pumping and hand expression techniques
  • baby feeding routine including night feeds and sleeping
  • reflux in babies

The baby group sessions are led by Michaela Smith, our specialist paediatric and neonatal dietitian and certified lactation consultant.

Baby feeding group workshops

Our virtual baby feeding support group is made up of 4 virtual sessions. You can pick and choose to attend individual or multiple workshops that suit you best.

Each workshop costs £50, or you can book all 4 sessions at a discounted fee of £175.

This workshop session is focussed around:

  • how lactation works at a biological level
  • autocrine vs endocrine control of lactation
  • infant reflexes and cues
  • getting breastfeeding off to the right start

This workshop session is focussed around:

  • how to position your baby comfortably at the breast
  • how to latch effectively
  • signs your baby is or is not getting enough milk
  • night feeds and sleeping

This workshop session is focussed around:

  • low milk supply
  • nipple pain and cracking
  • engorgement
  • plugged ducts
  • mastitis
  • breast abscesses

This workshop session is focussed around:

  • hand expression
  • pumping milk
  • storage and handling of breastmilk
  • how/when to cup/bottle feed
  • choosing the right bottle
  • burping
  • formula feeding advice

Appointments take place in our dedicated private outpatient facility, Westminster Bridge Consulting Rooms (WBCR). Alternatively, Michaela can see parents at the bedside on Westminster Maternity Suite. Both are located at St Thomas’ Hospital:
