Cysts are a common skin problem many people (including children) can develop. While they are harmless most of the time, they can grow in size and become painful. When this happens, cyst removal is the best treatment option.
At Guy’s and St Thomas’ Specialist Care, we prioritise your healthcare and needs. We understand cysts can have a significant impact on your daily life which is why we offer expert, precise removal services.
What is a cyst?
A cyst is a non-cancerous bump that develops beneath the surface of your skin. While they can develop anywhere on the body, they are usually found on your face, neck, chest and back. They can also be found on the scrotum and the inside of the vagina.
Often, cysts are painless. However, some cysts can continue to grow, causing discomfort and swelling over time. Cysts can also rupture, leading to potential infections and inflammation, which is why removing them is essential.
Symptoms of a cyst
Not all bumps or lumps under the skin are cysts. To check for yourself, here are some signs that your skin bump may actually be a cyst:
- it has a small blackhead blocking the opening
- a yellow, thick pus with a strong smell sometimes leaks or drains from the bump
- the area becomes red, inflamed or swollen
- it grows slowly in size
Causes of cysts
Cysts occur when the surface of your skin (epidermis) moves cells that would usually slough off deeper into the skin, allowing them to multiply and create the walls of a cyst. A protein called keratin is then secreted inside the cyst itself — which, over time, becomes the yellow discharge that leaks out.
The underlying cause for cyst development varies depending on the type of cyst you have. However, it is usually caused by damage to your hair follicle or an oil gland in the skin.
Types of cysts
There are two 2 main types of skin cysts, epidermoid and sebaceous. Epidermoid cysts are more common and are caused by damage to follicles or glands. Sebaceous cysts are less common and develop when the sebaceous gland becomes blocked and sebum (an oily substance produced by the sebaceous gland that moisturises your skin) cannot escape.
Risk factors for developing cysts
Some people have a higher risk of developing cysts. These risk factors include:
- being middle-aged
- being female
- having acne
- having a family history of cysts
Cysts are not contagious, so you cannot catch them from someone.
Diagnosing cysts
Diagnosing a cyst is usually carried out during a physical examination. Sometimes, a biopsy (sample of cells) may be taken and assessed for a detailed analysis.

Adult cyst removal
Your cyst does not need to be causing you pain or be infected to be removed. If you wish to have your cyst removed for cosmetic reasons, our specialists can help.get rid of it, we can remove it for you.
Never attempt to remove a cyst yourself. Doing so could put you at an increased risk of infection and cause permanent damage to your skin.
Cyst removal can be carried out in several ways and varies depending on the its severity of the cyst. Injections are often used to treat cysts, for example, to help reduce inflammation and swelling. ButHowever, they do not get rid ofremove the cyst entirely.
Drainage is another method of cyst removal. This is where a small incision is made and the pus inside is gently squeezed out. However, wWhile this type of treatment may be quick and effective, the results are often temporary and the cyst is likely to return.
Minor surgery is the most successful method of cyst removal as the entire cyst is removed, preventing reoccurrence in the same spot.
During cyst removal surgery, the area will be numbed with a local anaesthetic. This means you will be awake during the procedure but the area around the cyst will be numb. Next, a small incision will be made over the cyst and the walls, and the contents will then be removed. The incision is then stitched up and the procedure is complete.
Cyst removal in children
Cyst removal in children is the same as in adults. However, your child may receive local anaesthetic during draining to ensure they feel limited discomfort. This will also help to keep them still throughout the treatment.
Surgical cyst removal in children can often be carried out with local anaesthetic. However, if your child is especially young, they may need to briefly go under general anaesthetic. This means they will be asleep during the removal, preventing them from moving which can lead to potential complications.
At Guy’s and St Thomas’ Specialist Care, we will always prioritise your child’s health and well-being. By choosing us, your child will experience unparalleled, dedicated care from paediatric consultants to ensure their cyst removal is simple and painless.

Following the aftercare advice is essential when caring for you or your child’s wound. Keeping the area clean will prevent infection and promote healing. The stitches will also be dissolvable, meaning you won’t need to come back and have them removed.
