Clinical expertise

Dr Wajid Hussain is a consultant cardiologist/cardiac electrophysiologist (specialising in arrhythmia management).  He has clinical expertise in:

  • atrial fibrillation and the role of ablation in managing this condition
  • managing of arrhythmias ranging from occasional palpitations to serious arrhythmias
  • supraventricular tachycardia (SVT)
  • ventricular tachycardia
  • Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome

He has a particular interest in atrial fibrillation and the role of ablation in managing this condition.



Biography

Dr Wajid Hussain is a consultant cardiologist/cardiac electrophysiologist at Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals, where he treats private and NHS patients.

He graduated from the University of Birmingham with honours in physiology and medicine. He trained in general cardiology in London before specialising in electrophysiology. He then researched basic science projects related to heart rhythm disorders at Imperial College London and Columbia University, New York. This work led to him being awarded a Young Investigator Prize at the European Society of Cardiology.

He was appointed as consultant cardiac electrophysiologist at Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals to facilitate the expansion of ablation services, particularly in treating atrial fibrillation.


Research interests

Dr Wajid Hussain is interested in innovative digital solutions. He is the current chief medical information officer for NHS England, responsible for digital transformation at a national level. He was the RCP clinical director for digital health from 2019-2022, and the chief clinical information officer for heart, lung and critical care group from 2020-2025. He has a particular interest in the safety and success rates for ablations.

He is actively involved in improving digital literacy within the healthcare workforce.

He leads an award-winning project that screens for atrial fibrillation, using an innovative handheld device in community pharmacies.  He is also involved in projects that examine the best treatment for patients with arrhythmias.

Publications

Dr Wajid Hussain has published papers on basic science and clinical electrophysiology projects.  He is also active in various local and national research collaborations.

Teaching

Dr Wajid Hussain is responsible for training junior doctors who specialise in electrophysiology.

He has been invited to speak at regional, national and international meetings. The Royal Society of Medicine has also invited him to lecture on a various topics including managing atrial fibrillation and implantable defibrillators.

Dr Hussain continues to provide specialist training in electrophysiology to doctors in developing countries.
