Clinical expertise

Mr Moin Mohamed is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon who specialises in all aspects of medical retinal disease and cataract surgery.

He regularly treats patients with conditions such as:

  • age related macular degeneration (dry and wet)
  • diabetic eye disease (retinopathy, maculopathy and advanced disease)
  • retinal vascular disease (retinal artery and retinal vein occlusions)
  • central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR)
  • genetic/inherited retinal diseases and macular dystrophies
  • floaters (vitreous detachment)

He performs treatments such as:

  • cataract surgery
  • retinal screening (diabetes, drug toxicity, sickle cell disease)
  • verteporfin photodynamic therapy (including for chronic CSCR)
  • retinal laser therapy
  • intravitreal injection therapies
  • general and emergency ophthalmology


Biography

Mr Moin Mohamed is a senior and highly experienced consultant ophthalmologist, who has worked at St Thomas’ Hospital since 2006, where he sees a wide range of complex, challenging and rare diseases.

He undertook his advanced specialty training in retinal diseases at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, with previous extensive general ophthalmic and medical training in Sheffield and Leeds.

Was the recipient of a prestigious Wellcome Trust Fellowship, leading to the award of a PhD for original research into the molecular and genetic basis of inherited eye disease, at the Leeds Institute of Molecular Medicine. He now specialises in medical retinal diseases and cataract surgery.

Moin has a particular interest in utilising the latest intra-vitreal injection agents for the full spectrum of retinal diseases, and adopting the newest strategies for laser treatments in the management of these conditions.


Research

In addition to running a busy NHS medical retinal practice, Mr Moin Mohamed has a teaching and training commitment for trainee ophthalmologists from the UK and abroad, and is involved with a longstanding charitable link for teaching and training in Africa.

He is a regular speaker at ophthalmology and specialist retinal meetings nationally and internationally, is an examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, and is widely published in the field of retinal disease.

He has specialist clinics in chronic central serous chorioretinopathy, intravitreal injection clinics, genetic retinal disease, and sickle cell screening.
