Research interests
Dr Foran’s academic research is clinically orientated and focuses on:
- new and emerging therapies to prevent embolic/haemorrhagic stroke in high-risk patients with atrial fibrillation
- diagnostic (intracoronary imaging) and interventional techniques (calcium modification) to improve patient outcomes following percutaneous coronary stent implantation
- emerging interventional treatments for patients with resistant hypertension
In 2003, Dr Foran pioneered left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) here in the UK. LAAC is a key-hole interventional technique employed to reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in high-bleeding-risk atrial fibrillation patients as an alternative to oral anticoagulant therapy; he now has 20 years of experience in this field.
