Dr James Ware’s primary expertise is in cardiovascular genetics. His clinical interests include:
- diagnosis and management of inherited cardiac conditions (ICCs), particularly cardiomyopathies and inherited arrhythmia syndromes
- evaluation of families in which there has been a sudden unexplained death that might represent a genetic condition and genetic testing for ICC’s

Biography
Dr James Ware is an honorary consultant cardiologist who can treat private and NHS patients at Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals.
He studied medicine at the University of Cambridge, graduating in 2000. He then trained clinically in Cambridge, London and Geneva, Switzerland, before focusing on specialist training in cardiology in 2007. He studied for a PhD at the MRC Clinical Sciences Centre (CSC), funded by a fellowship from the Wellcome Trust.
He undertook postdoctoral research at Imperial College London, and in the United States at Harvard Medical School and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard.
In 2018, Dr Ware was promoted to reader in genomic medicine by the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London – recognising his academic contributions to this field.
Research
Dr James Ware’s overarching research aims are to understand the impact of genetic variation on the heart and circulation and to use genome information to improve patient care.
Dr Ware’s research group spans the Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals Cardiovascular Research Centre (where he co-leads the ICC research programme), the National Heart and Lung Institute, and the Medical Research Council (MRC) London Institute of Medical Services at Imperial College London.
