Dr Jafar Jafari Head is the head of upper GI physiology services Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals. He specialises in gastrointestinal (GI) physiology, diagnostic testing and therapeutic interventions.
He regularly treats patients with conditions such as:
- gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- dysphagia (swallowing problems)
- nausea and vomiting
- bloating
- excessive belching
- aerophagia (swallowed air)
- gastric chest pain

Biography
Jafar Jafari is a consultant clinical scientist in gastrointestinal physiology, he performs a range of diagnostic investigations and provides therapeutic interventions on the upper GI tract.
Jafar received his medical doctorate (MD) in 2000, and a PhD in Neurogastroenterology from Queen Mary University of London in 2014. He has been practising as a consultant clinical scientist in GI physiology since 2020.
Jafar is the founder of GI Cognition, the first CQC-recognised mobile GI physiology service in the UK, which addresses the need for accessible healthcare. He operates the first oesophageal biofeedback therapy clinic in the NHS; a significant contribution translating laboratory findings into clinical practice. Jafar’s commitment to excellence and his expertise have established him as a prominent figure in the field of GI physiology. He has also held a role on the committee board for AGIP (Association of GI Physiologists).
Research
Dr Jafar Jafari has a special research interest in oesophageal biofeedback, oesophageal dysmotility and behavioural gastroesophageal reflux disease. He has written over 160 articles in his career and published a book detailing the principles of hydrogen-methane breath testing.
