What is pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT)?

Pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT) is a specialist fertility service for people with an inherited genetic condition or an increased risk of passing on a serious genetic disorder. It tests embryos created through IVF before transfer, helping to reduce the risk of an affected pregnancy.

PGT may be recommended for families affected by conditions such as cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease and Huntington’s disease, as well as many other inherited genetic disorders.

We are the largest PGT centre in the UK, providing pre‑implantation genetic diagnosis and testing since 1997, and carrying out over 60% of all PGT cycles nationwide.

PGT treatment is offered through the Assisted Conception Unit at Guy’s Hospital, where our fertility specialists provide expert, personalised care.

Our fertility specialists provide personalised care, including:

  • short notice appointments, often available within one week

How does PGT work?

Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART) normally offered to patients with fertility problems such as IVF or ICSI are used to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. The aim is to obtain and fertilise a number of eggs.

The resulting embryos are allowed to develop from three to five days before a single cell is removed from each embryo to test if your genetic condition affects that embryo.

Up to two unaffected embryos are then transferred into the uterus. If successful, the pregnancy should be unaffected.

The process of PGT does not change the genes of the embryos. The team’s strategy helps eliminate the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome and multiple pregnancy – two of the biggest causes of patient illnesses associated with PGD.
