Dr Mayooran Shanmuganathan is a consultant cardiologist who specialises in heart failure, advanced heart failure and cardiac MRI.

He treats patients with most types of heart conditions including the following:

  • heart failure
  • advanced heart failure
  • cardiomyopathy
  • heart attack
  • myocarditis
  • pericarditis
  • hypertension/ high blood pressure
  • high cholesterol/ high lipids
  • arrhythmia/ palpitations
  • angina/ chest pain

He also performs the following procedures:

  • heart failure treatment
  • cardiac catheterisation
  • cardiac MRI
  • echocardiogram


Biography

Dr Shanmuganathan graduated in medicine at Imperial College London in 2008. He won several prizes during his training including one from the Welcome Trust.  Dr Shanmuganathan also completed an intercalated BSc in Healthcare Management in 2006 and was awarded first-class honours.

He was awarded a Graduate Scholarship from University of Oxford to conduct research into the application of cardiac MRI in acute myocardial injury and obtained a DPhil (PhD). His research has been presented at international meetings and published in several high-ranking peer-reviewed journals.

After having been awarded the membership of the Royal College of physicians in London (MRCP) in 2011, Dr Shanmuganathan trained as a cardiology registrar in several teaching hospitals in London. Subsequently, he was awarded the London heart failure fellowship to undertake sub-specialist training in heart failure and advanced heart failure (mechanical circulatory support and heart transplant) in Barts Heart Centre and Harefield Hospital.

He also trained in performing and reporting cardiac MRI in John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. Upon completion of his training, he was awarded dual accreditation in general internal medicine and cardiology by the UK’s General Medical Council.

Dr Shanmuganathan serves on the board of Trustees for three charities in the UK and enjoys conducting charitable projects and volunteering his time to help the local community.


Research

Dr Shanmuganathan conducts medical research and has published widely on heart failure, myocardial infarction, myocardial injury, cardiac MRI, COVID-19, coronary physiology and coronary microvascular disease, in international peer-reviewed medical journals.

He has served as principal investigator in several multi-centre clinical trials in heart failure. Dr Shanmuganathan has led provision of undergraduate medical training in the past and continues to teach and train students, nurses and junior doctors locally and regionally. He has authored chapters in several medical textbooks.
