Clinical expertise

Mr George Murphy is a consultant plastic surgeon who specialises in adult and paediatric hand surgery.

He regularly treats patients with conditions such as:

  • congenital hand anomalies
  • dupuytren’s
  • ganglia
  • nerve compression (carpal tunnel, cubital tunnel)
  • post weight-loss surgery
  • skin lesions
  • vascular malformations

He performs treatments such as:

  • abdominoplasty/thigh lift/arm lift
  • carpal tunnel release
  • dupuytren’s fasciotomy and needle fasciectomy
  • excision/debulking of vascular anomalies
  • excision of ganglia
  • excision of skin lesions


Biography

Mr George Murphy is a consultant hand and plastic Surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. He attended medical school at Cambridge, followed by Bart’s Hospital in London, where he was awarded the Sutton Prize and a rahere studentship. He completed junior medical training in London and Oxford, then was awarded his national training number on the prestigious Oxford plastic surgery rotation.

He completed a PhD in congenital hand surgery at Great Ormond St, securing over £100,000 of funding, then passed the FRCS Plast end of training exam and completed his training in February 2022. George undertook fellowships in hand surgery at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and Great Ormond St, before taking up his consultant post at St Thomas’. He also holds the British Diploma in Hand Surgery.


Research

Mr Murphy was awarded a Hunterian Professorship for his PhD research by the Royal College of Surgeons in 2023. He has published widely and presented at international meetings in Los Angeles and Hong Kong, as well as regularly across Europe. He co-directs the St Thomas’ advanced cadaveric hand course, and is departmental lead for research.
